Chocolate Train Ride

Last weekend I was able to cross something off my bucket list. We got to ride the Heber Creeper! They had a chocolate lover's train ride where you get to take a 90 minute ride while tasting different chocolates. I honestly didn't know what to expect, and the day of I realized that we missed Day Lights Savings time by two days so it would be completely dark by the time we got on the train. We drove an hour to Heber in a snow storm, I heard from lots of people to dress warm because the train cars do not have heating or cooling, so I had the kids bring a blanket and winter coats. Then I thought about what I had done and how miserable it could potentially end up being with the kids...I got us tickets to a place that we have to drive an hour in the car to, then board a train car with no heat and in the dark to then sit and ride for another hour and half, and then drive another hour back home... Honestly I was kinda panicking as was Stephen. Car rides are not very fun sometimes.

So we are driving through the canyon as it starts to snow and then Zander says he's feeling sick. Ah man! I totally forgot about the boys' car sickness especially through the canyons. I find a bag and some Dramamine and pass it back. Lucas says he's not feeling well either. I pass him some meds and a bag. A few minutes later Grayson yells from the back that his tummy hurts and he's going to throw up. I toss him a bag and try to get him to take some medicine but he refused to take any. Then I realize that I don't have any wipes in the car, so I hope and pray no one throws up!

Grayson fell asleep a few minutes later and we made it to the train station with no incident. Phew! But then we have a 90 minute train ride and I start panicking again because they could still end up feeling sick the whole time, and I didn't bring anything for them to do on the ride.

But I am happy to say that we all had a great time! As soon as I got our tickets we were ushered outside beside the train as we met some lawmen and some outlaws who were trying to rob the train! There were jokes and puns and guns shooting every which way; they put on a great show just as the last of the sunlight disappeared over the mountains. The kids even got candy from the lawmen! Grayson was in heaven. Stephen was so worried about this trip that he forgot we get to eat chocolate during our ride, so that made him ease up a bit. The kids were happy, Zander was feeling a lot better as was Grayson as he kept popping salt water taffy in his mouth. I got to sit by Lucas on one side and the other four sat on the other side of the train. We had a guy play some fiddle music, jokes were made, hot chocolate and chocolate treats were passed out about every 20 minutes, history was recited about the train and the chocolate treats we were eating. The kids were occupied the whole time and loved it all. It didn't seem like we were on there for an hour and a half, but it was just the right amount of time. And come to find out they installed a heater at the back of the train where our seats happened to be, so the kids shed their winter coats. Now they are asking if we can go back to do another train ride sometime. I am so glad this trip turned out as well as it did.
